Volume 39, Issue 12, December 2023

Integrating multisensory inputs to generate accurate perception and guide behavior is among the most critical functions of the brain. Subcortical regions such as the amygdala are involved in sensory processing including vision and audition, yet their roles in multisensory integration remain unclear. Shan et al. characterize the neural integration of audiovisual sensory inputs in the macaque amygdala and adjacent regions. In a scenario shown on the cover, while listening to the sea and viewing the incoming waves simultaneously, information from auditory and visual senses is merged in the brain via different neural pathways to generate stereoscopic perception. See pages 1749–1761. (Cover designed and provided by Liu Yuan and Ji Dai).
