Interval timing, which is on the scale of hundreds of milliseconds to tens of seconds, contributes importantly to cognitive behaviors, such as associative learning and decision making. In this issue, Xie et al investigate how interval timing behavior is influenced by the recent experience of temporal intervals. In the cover image, the mouse is getting sugar water as a reward at a fixed interval indicated by the first three stopwatches from the left. After a sudden shortening of the interval as indicated by the fourth stopwatch, the mouse's reward expectation movement occurs earlier next time. The stopwatch is embedded in the brain, indicating that neuronal activity not only encodes the elapsed time but also reflects recent experience during interval timing behavior. See pages 559–575.
