Microcephaly is more common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) than in the general population. However, the underlying mechanism is not very clear. Xu et al. demonstrate that deficiency in the microcephaly-associated gene WDR62 causes ASD-like behaviors independent of microcephaly, and retinoic acid treatment significantly alleviates those behaviors. On the cover, mice with normal brain size (Wdr62 Nex-cKO) or microcephaly (Wdr62 knockout) hide in the corners of the bar and do not socialize with other mice (ASD-like behavior). WDR62-deficient mice in the front of the pub are drinking retinoic acid beverage, and happily discussing the regulatory mechanism of retinoid acid. See pages 1333–1347.
