Multiple anesthetic exposures in early life induce central nervous system developmental abnormalities and neurobehavioral impairment. In this issue, Deng et al. revealed that triggering the receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) plays a protective role against neurocognitive impairment in mice after neonatal exposures to sevoflurane via enhancing the microglia-mediated pruning of dendritic spines in CA1 neurons. On the cover, a mouse is under sevoflurane anesthesia. The tree represents a neuron exposed to sevoflurane. Microglia are activated to repair the damaged neuron. See pages 1215–1229. (Cover designed by Dr. Li Deng).
