Adolescent depression involves complex, cell-type-specific changes in brain regions such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc). Using single-nucleus RNA sequencing, Teng et al. revealed that the stress-related gene FKBP5 is significantly upregulated in glial cells of the NAc in adolescent macaques with depressive-like behaviors. The cover illustration draws inspiration from the legendary Chinese figure “Sun Wukong (孙悟空)”, the Monkey King, to symbolize the battle against depression. Here, FKBP5 is wielded as a golden cudgel “Ruyi Jingu Bang (如意金箍棒)”, striking down a blue demon labeled “Depression” in the stormy valleys of the NAc.
